The College of Law Birmingham Mentoring Scheme 2009/2010
The scheme is organised by the Careers Service at the College and has now run successfully for several years. The aim is to give students who have little or limited legal experience an insight into life as a practitioner in the legal profession. The scheme will run from mid-November until the end of April, commencing with a launch event held at the College of Law. The College of Law ask that mentors agree to have at least four contacts with their student during this time, the first one being in person though subsequent contacts could be via e-mail or phone, with the student expected to be pro active in arranging contact. The College of Law welcomes mentors from all types of firms. However, they would particularly like to hear from mentors who are trainees in smaller/medium firms covering areas of law such as: criminal, family, personal injury, private client and publicly funded areas of law. The College of Law currently have very few mentors with this background. A previous Mentor commented that the scheme was: “An enjoyable experience sharing knowledge…made me look again at what I do and why. It has also made me realise how far I have come from being a recent student myself - always a bonus!”. If you are interested in taking part please contact Christine Gray at the College of Law Careers Service - e-mail careers.B@lawcol.co.uk or telephone 01483 216058 for more information.

The College of Law Business Game 2009/2010 – Mentors needed
Every year the College of Law runs a business simulation competition, known as the Business Game, whereby teams of students compete to run their “businesses” successfully. Each team is guided by a mentor, who is often a trainee solicitor from a local firm. It is really useful for the LPC and BVC students participating to receive guidance from the mentors, both in relation to the Game itself, and also often in connection with obtaining information about legal careers and the role of a trainee solicitor. Mentors who have assisted in previous years have also said that they really enjoyed the experience, and the College is now keen to recruit new mentors for next year’s competition. The next Business Game will run over three evenings – one in November 2009, one in December 2009 and one in January 2010. The exact dates will be finalised during the summer. Mentors would need to attend for a couple of hours on each of these occasions, or if a mentor cannot attend on all three evenings, then arrangements can be made for you to “share” the role with another mentor who is in a similar position. If you are interested in assisting as a mentor at the Business Game, then please contact Paul McConnell, Head of Corporate Activities at the College of Law in Birmingham (paul.mcconnell@lawcol.co.uk) for more information and/or to sign up!
