West Midlands Lupus Group
West Midlands Lupus Group is part of the national charity Lupus UK (Registered Charity No. 1051610).
Lupus causes the body's immune system to go into overdrive and the body starts to attack itself. The sympoms are many and varied, as the illness often seems to mimic other diseases. This gives rise to difficulty in diagnosis and the condition can be overlooked, sometimes for years. Achieving an early diagnosis allows a better opportunity for control of the disease.
Lupus UK (through its regional groups) aims to:
- give support to diagnosed sufferers,
- increase public awareness about lupus and its impact on sufferers and families,
- maximise fundraising income, increasing research into the causes of lupus.

2006 Chosen Charity - Birmingham Children's Hospital
The BTSS's chosen charity for 2006 was Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Sponsored skydive for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice.
Birmingham St Mary's Hospice cares for over 1,000 people each year suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. It costs £4.1 million each year to run Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, and 60% of that has to be met by voluntary donations.
The skydivers successfully completed skydives from 13,000 ft and at no point were the emergency services involved! They raised over £5000 for St Mary’s Hospice and despite being up at dawn (an evil time previously believed to occur only on week days) and spending various hours scowling at the clouds in a “no really, time to go away now” fashion, a great day was had by all!
St Basil’s Sleep Out
Ever wondered what it’s like to be without a bed for the night?
Many BTSS members got a taster by sleeping rough in aid of St Basil's on a very wet Friday 24th November. The sleep out is an annual event and apparently this year was the worse weather for 10 years! The rains truly came and relent they did not! Every fundraiser was given a cardboard box and a piece of plastic, some were very inventive and created admirable temporary dwellings, others were less lucky and sat in puddles for the night! The sleep out was really well attended and St Basils are confident that it is a substantial amount! Well done to all those who took part - same time same place next year?!
You can catch up with what St Basil’s are doing at http://www.stbasils.co.uk/
